Field trip with Rocky's class

I went along for Rockam's second field trip of the year to Shaker Lakes Nature Center. It was a pretty perfect morning for a walk in the woods.

We saw plenty of dear, ducks, squirrels, fish and a young blue heron. I also spotted a nuthatch, goldfinches in their cool weather plumage and some house finches :)

And a big worm. Rockam also held it.

Rocky wanted me to take his picture by the marsh mallow plants.

Rocky's first day of PreK 4

Rocky wanted to survey the class before jumping in.

Mothers Day

Rocky's class performed a few songs to honor their moms.

Kathryn tried in vain to get Rockam to participate.

Stephen made a card and daddy made smiley face waffles.

Valentines

On Thursday, my friend Megan and I hosted the Valentine's Day party at Grace. Here, Rocky concentrates hard on making a valentine with Kathryn and Ruby.

Megan made a zillion heart-shaped cookies, which the kids decorated with frosting and sprinkles. They made extra for the Salvation Army shelter down the block from Grace. Megan, her girls and I brought a big load of donations from the parents of Rocky's classmates to the shelter that afternoon.

Oliver had fun too. It was a little bit of déjà vu for me :)

Math Night

Last night, Stephen had a Math Night at his school. We brought the whole family.

The gymnasium was set up with different stations for each grade level. Here Stephen plays war with his teacher Mrs. Puckett.

After he blazed through the kindergarten activity, he tried first grade, second grade, fourth and fifth grade to the amazement and cheers of several teachers and his principal :)

He also did science experiments with marbles and calculators.

Here's Rocky eating his 100 snacks that he painstakingly counted out from a long buffet line of cheez its, chocolate chips, Cheerios and the like.

So sorry I didn't capture Oliver, who wandered around the gym with no fear.

Rockam's first day of preschool at Grace

Rockam has been in denial about starting school. Even this morning at breakfast he insisted he wasn't going to school. (see video below) But he gladly had his picture taken.

Oliver was a little jealous so he photo-bombed it from behind.

My little-big boy is growing up!

Feeling some trepidation.

Finding his hook.

Rockam chose a seat away from the little girl that was trying to "help" him.

"Wook, Mom, I made a boat! Ok. Byyyyeee, Mom!"
[My cue to get lost before I dent his reputation]

He seemed pretty well-adjusted despite his attitude at breakfast:

Stephen's first day of school

Stephen stands outside his new school, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary. In this shot, he was unhappy about the heaviness of his backpack.

Backpack off the shoulders, the frowny-face is back to happy again.

We met Stephen's teacher, Mrs. Angie Puckett, last night at the school's open house. She estimated that there would be about 20 children in her class. As the boys and I walked to Stephen's classroom, Stephen was hopping on the colored tiles the entire time. He showed no fear as he walked into the room and sat on the rug with all the other children. I guess he's as unsentimental as his mama :)
